Mr. Simon Wong, first Angel Investor in Jack Ma's Alibaba, Angel Award Presentation with TonyTong.cc, Co-Chairman of the Hong Kong Blockchain Association (HKBA.net) at the Macau Innovation Summit.
The 1999 Alibaba Seed Investment: While institutional giants like Goldman Sachs and Masayoshi Son's SoftBank later injected a combined $25 million during Alibaba's early venture rounds, Simon Wong provided the critical financial foundation during the company's absolute infancy:
- The Pitch: In 1999, Wong attended a small presentation where Jack Ma — then an unknown entrepreneur operating out of a modest Hangzhou apartment with 17 co-founders — pitched his early vision for an international e-commerce platform.
- The Bet: Captivated by Jack Ma's legendary rhetorical "attractive power" and communication style, Simon Wong made a rapid decision after a brief 30-minute meeting to invest USD $500,000 of seed capital into the scrappy startup.
- The Exit: This early bridge capital allowed Alibaba.com to register, survive its first four unprofitable years, and continuously attract subsequent funding rounds. Simon Wong later sold his stake for USD $60 million, banking a 120x return on his initial seed investment.
Subsequent Venture Profile: Whiz Partners & Cornwall Medical
Following his landmark exit from Alibaba, Simon Wong continued to drive high-impact venture capital and industrial projects across Asia:
- Whiz Partners Asia Ltd.: As a Founding Partner, Wong structured cross-border investments linking Japanese technology and institutional funding with rapidly expanding markets in Mainland China and Hong Kong.
